Megan Lavin’s oldest son will be playing soccer in high school, and she recently received a notice about the fall schedule. In it was a phrase allergy moms have come to dread: “team dinner”.

As her son has multiple food allergies, Megan’s initial response was “oh boy, here we go again.” She knows well the repetitive process of educating every new teacher, new coach or new team members’ parents about her son’s allergy needs.

However, as she shares in her latest video for the Megan’s Minute series, a funny thing happened on the path to food allergy fatigue. Megan headed to her garden, gazing with new appreciation at the lovely daisies, hydrangea and roses starting to bloom.

She realized how wonderful it was that the previous owners had done the heavy lifting of sowing seeds and cultivating perennials. Thanks to their efforts, her family now reaps the benefits of these garden beauties year after year.

That trip to the garden made Megan think about all the food allergy advocacy she has done for years. In a eureka moment, she realized this education makes a much bigger difference than she had realized.

Allergy Awareness’s Seeds

While her main motivation is keeping her own child safely accommodated, the advocacy of parents like Megan is more far-reaching.

“I’m planting seeds,” she notes in the video. “It reminded me that every person who understands food allergies a little better because of me may become a blessing to the next food allergy family they meet.”

Making things better for the next person. “When you stop and think about it,” says Megan, “that’s a really lovely thought.”

It is. As we close out the official Food Allergy Awareness Month, we hope Megan’s seeds of inspiration help you to keep advocating and teaching others, and knowing that you’re making a difference, too.
