Contributor Megan Lavin loves to find easy, allergy-friendly ways to travel with her family of six. This month, she takes us along for her family’s adventure on Idaho’s scenic Hiawatha bike trail.

She admits to having some nerves when planning the three-day trip. It included a day’s worth of driving to reach trail area, then the long day of biking with the kids the next day. Then the car trip back.

This would mean several away-from-home meals. So how did Megan and her family with multiple food allergies manage? In this episode of Allergic Living’s Megan’s Minute series, Megan walks us through her smart meal solutions.

Quest for a Safe Restaurant

For the big ride day, bagged lunches were her friend. The family did eat a couple of times in restaurants, but hear about the hoops Megan jumped through to ensure allergy safety.

For instance, the trailhead was near the small city of Coeur d’Alene. It has some nice local restaurants, but little by way of chains known to accommodate her sons’ allergies. What to do? As always Megan, came up with a solution.

Megan recently asked her four kids about their favorite part of the summer. They all said the Hiawatha Trail trip. She calls it a “memory-maker,” and is glad she didn’t let food allergies hold her family back from this adventure.

As she notes in the video, “every time I’ve pushed myself outside of my comfort zone, I’ve grown and been glad I did it.”
