Allergic Living contributor Megan Lavin undertakes a fun kitchen experiment. She puts two major plant-based, dairy-free whipping ‘creams’ to the test. In a head-to-head matchup, Silk Heavy Whipping Cream Alternative goes up against rival Country Crock Heavy Whipping Cream Alternative.

Which one will emerge the better, fluffier, tastier whipped topping? You know, the kind that just needs some powdered sugar and vanilla, and it’s ready to plop onto a pie or cupcake? The one that also makes the home baker think of dairy-containing whip cream?

Watch the latest video in the Megan’s Minute series to find out! Megan says the winner looks “just like traditional whipped cream. It’s got the stiff peaks.”

She shares the ingredients for each brand, knowing that people in the food allergy community have different diet needs.

The Silk alternative’s ingredients are filtered water, coconut oil, sunflower oil, faba bean protein, guar gum, sunflower lecithin and natural flavors.

Country Crock’s alternative cream is composed of plant milk (water, lentil protein), plant-based oil (coconut and canola oils), sugar, modified corn starch, sucrose esters of fatty acid, natural flavor, mono and di-glycerides, salt, guar gum, sunflower lecithin, locust bean gum and beat-carotene (color).

Whipping Creams: No Real ‘Loser’

Of the contender that didn’t win the challenge, Megan notes that she still appreciates having it as an option.

“I’m always grateful when brands take the time, invest and put out a product for the allergy community,” she says. “Everyone has different tastes, everyone has different palettes, everyone has different dietary needs.” So enjoy the challenge – and let us know in social media what your experience has been with dairy-free toppings.
