All children with type 1 diabetes should be screened for celiac disease, according to the head of pediatric endocrinology at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. Dr. Phyllis Speiser makes the recommendation following a study of more than 500 patients who were newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

After using blood tests to screen for celiac disease, and then conducting biopsies in those who screened positively to confirm a celiac diagnosis, 12 patients were found to have celiac disease. Notably, none of them had gastroenterological symptoms, such as diarrhea or bloating, underscoring the importance of regular screening.
