Allergic Living contributor Megan Lavin had the surprise of her life this fall. She was asked to apply for a morning anchor position at her local TV station. It was a dream job opportunity for the broadcast journalism graduate.
The issue was: could this experienced allergy mom and recipe blogger manage the job, the household load, and getting to work for 4 a.m.? Megan has four busy kids, two of whom have food allergies.
It would be a lot, but when the job offer came, she decided to go for it, with her husband’s support. His schedule had become more flexible, he could take on more. And while very busy, Megan is living out her career dream.
One extremely helpful benefit? Her tween son with multiple food allergies was already taking over the making of his lunch for school. In an earlier episode of the Megan’s Minute series, she told readers about her process for teaching him those allergy prep skills. See the video “My Food Allergy Teen Masters School Lunch“.
“Little did I know that just months later, I’d be working full time with a wild schedule,” Megan says in the video. She’s grateful that her son got plenty of practice “while I was still home to guide him before this huge transition.”
Allergy Prep: No Time Like Now
From the experience of gaining an amazing opportunity, Megan stresses to fellow food allergy parents the perks in starting early to share the food allergy load. “If there’s a task you’ve been putting off, something that would help your food allergy family member grow more independent, I say: seize the day.”
She adds: “For me, life just gets busier and busier, so there’s no time like the present.”
Don’t miss Megan’s compelling video on what a difference laying those food allergy foundations can make. Especially when a great opportunity unexpectedly arises.
