Parenting contributor Megan Lavin reflects on her ‘deer in the headlights’ early days of becoming a food allergy mom.
To do so, she borrows on the social media trend where people say, “I probably needed a hug but….” Those posting then go on to describe what they did or accomplished – even when they were down or facing struggles.
In Megan’s version of definitely needing a hug, she thinks back to her older son’s diagnosis of multiple food allergies. It was so daunting, she recalls in her latest video for Allergic Living’s Megan’s Minute video series.
Her new normal of reading every label and avoiding many foods had yet to become well, normal. She wonders how many fellow allergy moms can relate.
In her hug moment, Megan shares how far she’s come from the fog of diagnosis to having a great life with four amazing kids. Two of whom have multiple food allergies.
“It’s good to look back and recognize the growth you’ve experienced,” she notes. “I tend to get caught up and don’t give myself credit sometimes. I’m sure we all do.”
In fact, Megan went from someone who barely knew how to turn on the stove to becoming a recipe content creator. You likely know her highly popular Allergy Awesomeness website. Talk about accomplishing!
After Early Allergy Days, It Gets Better
Megan made this reflective video thinking especially of those food allergy moms still in the life-altering stage after diagnosis. That time period where you wonder, how you’ll ever see daylight, how your kids will go to school or eat out safely. But she’s here to tell you, you can make it.
Listen as she details:
• Finding enormously helpful friends with food allergy experience.
• Learning to cook safely and well.
• Figuring out how to travel.
Right after diagnosis, Megan would have teared up if she’d known she would become the creator of recipes people love. “And if you would have told me that my eldest son would be healthy, happy and super into sports and that his food allergies didn’t hold him back, I would have started bawling.”
We hope you enjoy and feel inspired by her video.
