Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem suffered an allergic reaction on June 17 and was rushed to a Washington D.C. hospital.

“Secretary Noem had an allergic reaction today. She was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement to the media.

McLaughlin said Noem, 53, “is alert and recovering.” However, she did not explain what the Secretary had reacted to.

Sources told CBS News that Noem was taken by ambulance to George Washington University Hospital. She was accompanied by her security detail.

ABC News reported the same, and said the Secretary was stable and able to speak to her staff. The network later reported that Noem was released from hospital on the evening of June 17.

The former governor of South Dakota leads the DHS, a huge agency with more than 260,000 employees.

In the 2024 election, President Donald Trump stressed immigration and border controls, including the deportation of undocumented migrants as priorities for his administration. As his Homeland Security chief, Noem is overseeing Trump’s immigration agenda.
