Ambassadors Raise Awareness
About Being Prepared for Anaphylaxis

Allergic Living’s editors share the news that a group of well-known personalities, including a fashion magazine’s creative director, a renowned chef and a TV actor, are telling their personal stories about managing food allergies.

Each lives with, or cares for someone with, food allergies and is serving as an Ambassador for a nationwide initiative.

Called EpiPen® On Location™, this initiative highlights the importance of:
• avoiding allergic triggers;
• having access to two epinephrine auto-injectors, such as EpiPen® (epinephrine injection) Auto-Injectors, at all times;
• and understanding that epinephrine, not an antihistamine, is the only first-line treatment for anaphylaxis.

Mylan Specialty, the marketer and distributor of EpiPen® Auto-Injector and a valued sponsor of Allergic Living, has brought this campaign to life.

Meet the Ambassadors
Three outstanding spokespeople are revealing their stories with shareable videos.

Nina Garcia: As a judge on TV’s “Project Runway” and Creative Director of Marie Claire, Nina knows the importance of being prepared both on and off the runway. Her son was diagnosed with severe allergies to peanuts and tree nuts after experiencing a life-threatening allergic reaction.
    In her new video for the EpiPen® On Location campaign, Nina describes how her family follows an anaphylaxis action plan by carefully avoiding allergic triggers and keeping two EpiPen Jr® (epinephrine injection) Auto-Injectors accessible in several locations, including at home, at school and with them on vacation. That planning proved vital when her son experienced anaphylaxis after eating a bite of a kale chip, as Nina explains in her new video.

Amanda Freitag: She judges contestants on a popular cooking competition show, and Chef Amanda Freitag has her own revelation: she has a known allergy to hazelnuts. The diagnosis was a “shock,” but today Chef Amanda always avoids her allergic trigger and keeps two EpiPen® Auto-Injectors in all of her kitchens – in her home, in her restaurant and on set. She is also vigilant about accommodating others at her NYC restaurant who, like her, have food allergies. Watch for her video, coming soon to EpiPenOnLocation.com.

Auggie Maturo: The 7-year-old plays the little brother on “Girl Meets World,” but Auggie Maturo has known real-life drama first-hand – he faced a life-threatening allergic reaction to a cashew as a young child. Today, Auggie is a busy boy, going to school, acting and playing sports. But he and his parents are ever mindful of his anaphylaxis action plan: they avoid his allergic triggers (tree nuts, peanuts, sesame and coconuts), stay aware of the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, and always keep two EpiPen Jr® Auto-Injectors at home, in his mom’s bag and with him when filming.
    He and his family are calling on other affected families to learn the importance of having epinephrine auto-injectors everywhere they go. Stay tuned for Auggie’s video, and read more about him at EpiPenOnLocation.com.

Important Safety Information
EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® Auto-Injectors contain a single dose of epinephrine, which you (or your caregiver or others who may be in a position to administer EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr®) inject into the middle of your outer thigh (upper leg) (through clothing, if necessary). Get emergency medical help right away. You may need further medical attention. Only a health care professional should give additional doses of epinephrine if you need more than two injections for a single anaphylactic episode. DO NOT INJECT INTO YOUR VEINS, BUTTOCKS, FINGERS, TOES, HANDS OR FEET. In case of accidental injection, please seek immediate medical treatment. Epinephrine should be used with caution if you have heart disease or are taking certain medicines that can cause heart-related (cardiac) symptoms.

Tell your doctor if you have certain medical conditions such as asthma, depression, thyroid disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, have any other medical conditions, are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Be sure to also tell your doctor all the medicines you take, especially medicines for asthma. If you have certain medical conditions, or take certain medicines, your condition may get worse or you may have longer lasting side effects when you use EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr®.

The most common side effects may include increase in heart rate, stronger or irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea or vomiting, difficulty breathing, paleness, dizziness, weakness, shakiness, headache, apprehension, nervousness or anxiety. These side effects may go away if you rest. Tell your health care professional if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.
