The Discovery Channel and FARE have partnered to produce a powerful new documentary on food allergies.

The hour-long production, titled “An Emerging Epidemic: Food Allergies in America”, is narrated by actor Steve Carell (whose own daughter is food-allergic) and tells the stories of people who manage life-threatening food allergies every day. These stories highlight what it’s like to live with life-threatening food allergies, while detailing how people are working to raise awareness in their communities.

Several renowned allergy experts are interviewed about the rise of food allergies, the science of the disease, and the progress of research toward food allergy treatments and a cure.

“We are proud to partner with the Discovery Channel to produce this important documentary,” said John Lehr, CEO of FARE, America’s leading food allergy organization. “Our hope is that this program will increase awareness of food allergy as a serious and growing public health issue, and educate viewers about the potentially life-threatening nature of the disease.”

One word of caution: there are some scenes discussing severe reactions and, in one case, a boy is shown on life-support tubes. While an excellent documentary, parents may not find these scenes suitable for young children.

The documentary debuted September 7, 2013 at 8 a.m. ET/PT, with an encore showing on September 21 at the same time. It may also be viewed online at

The documentary was made possible by an educational grant from FARE and Mylan Specialty, the maker of the EpiPen auto-injector. For more information, see:
